Then all Israel stoned them [to death] with stones; afterward they burned their bodies in the fire. Joshua 7 25b
The Lord had given specific instructions about what to do with the spoils of Jericho. They were not to take anything for themselves, only that which was given to the Lord. Because Achan violated the law and took spoils and hid them in his tent, not only did the Israelites lose their next battle, but Achan and his family were killed.
Every time I read a passage like this in the OT, I flinch, my mind asks why. Why was Achan’s entire family, sons and daughters killed for his sin? Why was Rahab’s entire family saved because of her faith? Could it be that after death those who were innocent in Achan’s family received grace and those in Rahab’s family that refused to believe, received damnation?
Four things stand out to me in this story;
- Be sure your sins will find you out.
- Our sins always affect our family more deeply than we ever realize.
- Our righteousness affects our family more deeply than we know.
- Death is not ever the end of the story. Death is simply a passage from earth to eternity.
Thanks to Jesus, each man dies for his own sin and lives because of His own faith. That is both the blessing and the curse. How I wish that my children and grandchildren could be saved by my faith. But, I am so thankful they are not condemned by my sin. Nonetheless, the influence is still very much present both ways.
Jesus, help us to realize how our actions influence our children, grandchildren and those around us. I am so thankful for the atonement that boldly proclaims forgiveness for my sins and can change that influence from sin to righteousness. I am thankful that You know each heart and judge accordingly and sin’s curse has been broken. May I always be reminded that my life is an influence one way or the other. Help me to always choose to be like You! May my life reflect your love
